If You Knit it, They Will Come

I just cannot get my head around it and I am truly thrilled!

For years I've been knitting quietly on my own suffering the "slings and arrows", aka catty comments, of women who have come in and out of my life and have laughed at me for it...Until now.

I've been living as an Expat House Frau in Brussels, Belgium for almost three years ( which is a pretty good gig if you can get it) and recently I've had the great pleasure of meeting a group of women who I am fortunate to call my friends. I love good food, THEY love good food. I love wine THEY love wine. I love a Limoncello after a girlie lunch, THEY love a Limoncello after a girlie lunch. And they'll EVEN drink mine for me when I can't finish. Now is that friendship or what? I mean what more could I ask for right?

But wait, on top of all the mischief we've been making over the last couple of months, they have all, and many of them with great speed, become knitters. I mean really, to say that I have died and gone to gal pal heaven would be an understatement!

At first I thought it was a joke. I thought it would be a fleeting thing which they would get bored of in a couple of weeks. I tried to stay cool and reserved about my enthusiasm but when they got psyched about it, how the Hell was I supposed to contain myself?

The result is nothing short of amazing. We meet once a week to knit and chat and we meet at each others homes to help each other and create. We even meet at yarn shops around the city because I think we are becomming addicted! Some of us are just getting started while others have taken the yarn and run with it. Stay tuned for some fabulous photographs of our creations.

This Blog will hopefully be a hilarious and engaging account of my experiences with them and our "Misadventures in Yarn"!.

  1. My knitting master. YOU surprised? I was surprised that you didn't stop answering your phone in fear of all my bunged up holey, knotty fix up jobs. I shall always offer to drink your leftover limoncello....Thanks for the inspiration and the patience. MWAH. xox

  2. can you smell the envy emanating all the way from the west coast of N.A. ? Gazelle, you are the ONLY friend of mine who knits! You have no idea how pleased I was that day at Miss Sandys when I spotted you across the waiting room, needles in hand. I KNEW at that moment, that we would be friends.

Sadly our time together was short-lived . Damn Johann and his wonderful job opportunities. :) To this day I still do not have friends that knit. I don't understand why so many are so opposed.

Even my own sister will not knit. I have taught her to sew, but that's the end of it.

My mother taught me to knit one summer when I was 16, and for some reason did not have anything to do. She told me I would love it, and would always be happy to have that skill. How well she knew me, even tho, I KNEW at the time, that she had no clue as to the real me. LOL....ah mothers......are we as smart as our mothers?

Very sadly, there is not a decent yarn shop within close proximity to moi. When I am truly desperate I go to Michaels and pick the best of a not so great lot. Every so often I get to a wonderful little shop in the town of Jerome, about 2 hours from here. It's a very cool, old mining town built into the side of a mountain about a 1/2 hour from Sedona. We will drive up for a day of picture taking, wandering, wool shopping, and lunch at our favorite restaurant. It's wonderful to do it with Craig, but a girls trip up there, would be very enjoyable indeed. My next trip up will be to purchase a gorgeous, purple cashmere.....dreaming of what to do with it.

  3. Hey Miss! Purple cashmere!!!! Can you post a pic of it? I just bought some Debbie Bliss "Silk Aran" in a dark plum color which, and I kid you not, I'd like to unravel and roll around in! Tragic or what? I don't know what to do with IT either. It's SO soft. Have you ever tried to buy yarn on line? I havent but I know some that do. I just feel like for me, yarn is a really tactile kind of thing. Gotta touch it, take it into the natural light to see the true color etc.

Anyhoo I think you should make a scarf out of your cashmere but does it ever get cold enough to wear them there?

    Happy Sunday, G.

  4. LOL....yes it gets VERY cold in the evenings. I am currently making a "looped" scarf (not quite a snood, but I guess you's just call it an attached scarf".) out of an incredibly soft dark grey alpaca. It gets chilly for me even some days.....I do not like an exposed neck if it's even a bit chilly....therefore, constantly on the lookout for new and original scarf ideas. Was thinking snood for the purple cashmere.

Have not bought wool on-line. Am like you and need to 'feel' it. :) I am always looking, but have yet to take the plunge.

Don't have pic of cashmere, can't even remember brand. Didn't purchase, as I have a tendency to get carried away and buy more than I can handle. New resolution: shop for each project separately. We'll see how long that lasts. :)

  5. The police are on the lookout for someone who has stabbed 6 people with knitting needles. A police spokesman said that the culprit is following a pattern

Thought you might get a little giggle out of this one!
